All Mozilla Firefox extensions broken

You may have seen Kee disappear from your Mozilla Firefox web browser recently. Don’t panic - everything is still secure and Mozilla are continuing to work on a fix.

You can still copy/paste passwords from Kee Vault or KeePass if the problem affects you so you won’t be locked out of anything important.

For some people the problem is already resolved and for others it may start or stop in the coming hours.

The official information coming from Mozilla is sparse and hosted on a server that is usually unavailable (presumably it is overloaded) but there is now a slow workaround if you suffer from this problem.

From Mozilla:

10:50 a.m. UTC / 01:50 a.m. PDT: We rolled-out a fix for release, beta and nightly users on Desktop. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps.

In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, we are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled by going to Firefox Preferences → Privacy & Security → Allow Firefox to install and run studies.

You can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.

We are working on a general fix that doesn’t need to rely on this and will keep you updated.

So, despite their initial paragraph, it appears that you may have to take active steps. Specifically, I would suggest ensuring that you have “Studies” enabled if you find that Kee is missing when you receive this announcement.

Since this is a global problem affecting everyone that uses Firefox I won’t keep sending updates from this forum unless something specific to Kee crops up in the coming days as the fallout from this disaster clears.

Mozilla recommend using their support forum to keep up to date:

Since that is often offline, I recommend instead looking at the relevant Twitter account:

The official Mozilla page:

To fix immediately, copy and paste the link below (it’s the hot-fix that is deployed using Firefox Studies):

https://storage.googleapis.com/moz-fx-normandy-prod-addons/extensions/hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate%40mozilla.com-1.0.2-signed.xpi

Go to Menu > Help > About Firefox, wait for update to download and click “Restart to update Firefox”.

FF for Android simply install latest version from Play Store.

Only other thing I will add is that I’ve seen quite a few people slandering Mozilla over this. Mistakes happen, and the FF extension repository has been kept a lot cleaner than Chrome’s over the years.

Mozilla have rolled out Firefox 66.0.4 which contains a fix for this issue. There are still a few bugs they have to fix to get everything working for every add-on for all users.

As far as I can tell, there are no outstanding bugs that relate specifically to Kee.

From the current list of known bugs, my best guess for anyone still struggling with this problem even after upgrading to 66.0.4 would be that it relates to your use of a Firefox (NOT KeePass) master password or your file system permissions. There’s more details in this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1549249
